Between Shadows

Alison Underwood & Olena Noëlle Lysenko

Between Shadows, presented by Modfellows Art Gallery, displays artwork that vividly captures the human emotion encompassed in desires and spirituality of humanity in nature from the two artists Alison Underwood and Olena Noëlle Lysenko.

Alison Underwood's work evokes various emotions of desires as her artwork proves to display the ideas of temptation and anticipation. These profound feelings are demonstrated in the forms of vivid humanity and beauty. The imagery symbolizes feelings in the simple yet ordinary parts of individual’s lives; furthermore, the attraction many have to curious cravings is vibrantly captured. The artwork proves to have incredibly detailed, bright imagery provided through a tone of darkness in a thematic sense. The imagery is developed and directed with flat geometrics and uses a wide variety of artistic techniques across a two-dimensional space and is created in stylistic techniques with painting, printmaking, collages, as well as digital imagery. Alison grew up in a small town in rural Kentucky. She holds a B.A. in Studio Art from The University of Louisville and an M.A. in History of Design and Curatorial Studies from Parsons/Cooper Hewitt in New York City. She currently lives and works from her studio in Nashville, Tennessee.

Olena Noëlle Lysenko magnifies fleeting moments of private ritual, personal transformation, and the power of the breath through large scale oil-paintings in Between Shadows. The collection is painted in a loose, impressionistic style with emotive color, and are populated with naturalistic elements such as water, flowers, and outer space. This imagery symbolizes themes of rejuvenation, self-reflection, and the unknown. The use of arch-shaped canvases function as a doorway that imply a liminal space to be moved through, be it from oneself to the next, from the unconscious to the conscious, or the material to the spiritual. Olena is originally from Ukraine and spent her early life studying drawing, painting and sculpture techniques while growing up in New Jersey. Olena currently works and resides in Nashville, TN.
